Common Application Schools
What if Navigating 900+ Common App Schools Could Actually Be Simple?
Let me show you how to master the Common Application—without the overwhelm.
I’m Dr. Sapna, and after 8+ years helping students get into their dream schools (yes, including Yale, Columbia, and Georgetown!), I’ve learned that the Common App doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, once you understand how it works, it becomes your secret weapon for applying to multiple colleges efficiently.
Here’s What You Really Need to Know About the Common App
The Common Application is like having a master key that opens doors to over 900 colleges. Founded in 1975, it’s transformed from a simple form used by 15 schools into the most powerful college application platform in the world.
And here’s the beautiful part: You only fill it out once.
Your Common App Journey Has 7 Simple Steps
Let me walk you through each section—think of me as your personal guide:
- Profile Section This is where you introduce yourself. Basic stuff—name, address, citizenship. Don’t overthink it. Just be accurate.
- Family Section
Here’s where context matters. Colleges want to understand your background, not judge it. First-generation student? That’s actually a strength. - Education Section Your academic story goes here. Current school, counselor info, GPA, honors. Pro tip: Those 5 honors slots? Choose wisely—quality over quantity.
- Testing Section SAT, ACT, AP scores—they all go here. Remember, many schools are test-optional now. (We can discuss whether submitting scores helps your specific situation.)
- Activities Section You get 10 spots. I always tell my students: depth beats breadth. That passion project you’ve led for 3 years? That’s gold.
- Writing Section This is where you shine. Your 650-word personal essay is your chance to show who you are beyond the numbers. (And yes, I’ll help you make it unforgettable.)
- Courses & Grades Some schools want self-reported grades. Be honest—they’ll verify everything anyway.

Which Schools Actually Use the Common App?
Here’s what surprises most families: ALL the Ivy League schools accept the Common App. Every single one.
The Heavy Hitters on Common App:
- Ivy League: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, UPenn
- Top Privates: Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory
- Public Powerhouses: University of Michigan, UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech
- Hidden Gems: Liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore
And Yes, a Few International Schools Too!
- University of St Andrews (where Prince William went!)
- Sciences Po in Paris
- Yale-NUS in Singapore
But Wait—Who DOESN’T Use the Common App?
This is crucial, and it trips up so many students:
The Big Exceptions:
- All UC schools (Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, etc.)—they have their own system
- MIT—uses MyMIT
- Georgetown—proudly independent (However, note that they will be on the Common App as of 2026!) Check out the announcement here.
- University of Texas schools—use ApplyTexas
I once had a student who almost missed the UC deadline because they thought everything was on Common App. Don’t let that be you!
What About Transfer Students?
Good news: Over 650 schools accept Common App for transfers. The process is similar but with a few twists:
- Different deadlines (usually March-May)
- Professor recommendations required
- You’ll need to explain why you’re transferring
The Hidden Benefits Most Students Miss
Here’s what the Common App really gives you:
Consistency: Your story stays coherent across all applications
Efficiency: Apply to 20 schools with the effort of 5
Flexibility: Add schools later if needed
Support: Built-in recommendation system for your teachers
My Top 5 Common App Success Strategies
After helping hundreds of students, here’s what actually works:

Start on August 1st
The Common App opens August 1st. Log in that day. Even if you just create your account, you’re ahead of 90% of students.

Save Every 20 Minutes
The Common App times out after 60 minutes. I’ve seen too many tearful students lose essays. Save obsessively.

Preview Before Submitting
Always, always preview your application as a PDF. Formatting can get wonky. Check everything.

Track School-Specific Requirements
Each school has supplements. Yale wants 3 additional essays. Some want portfolios. Create a spreadsheet—I’ll show you how.

Submit 48 Hours Early
Servers crash on deadline day. Every. Single. Year. Be the smart student who submits early.
Remember: You're Not Alone in This
The Common App might seem overwhelming at first—900+ schools, dozens of requirements, multiple deadlines. But here’s what I tell all my students: Take it one section at a time.
Every student I’ve worked with has survived the Common App. More than survived—they’ve used it to get into schools they once thought were impossible.
You’ve got this. And if you need help making your Common App shine? I’m here for you.
