Master Every Type of Interview from US Admissions to Oxbridge

Hey there, future interviewees! Dr. Sapna here, and if your palms are getting sweaty just thinking about college interviews, take a deep breath. I’ve got you covered!

After preparing hundreds of students for college interviews (including those nail-biting Oxford interviews I know firsthand!), I’m here to demystify the process. Whether you’re facing an alumni coffee chat or a formal admissions interview, let’s turn those nerves into confidence!

Why College Interviews Matter (But Not How You Think)

First, let me ease your mind: college interviews rarely make or break your application. Think of them as opportunities, not obstacles. They’re your chance to:

– Bring your application to life
– Show dimensions that don’t fit on paper
– Demonstrate genuine interest
– Learn about the school from an insider
– Practice professional communication

Most importantly? They’re conversations, not interrogations!

Types of College Interviews: Know What You're Walking Into

Alumni Interviews: The Most Common Type

What they are: Conversations with college graduates in your area

Where: Coffee shops, libraries, offices, or virtual

 Duration: 30-60 minutes typically

Tone: Casual to semi-formal Weight: Usually informational/supplemental

The Reality Check: Alumni interviewers are volunteers who LOVE their school. They want to like you! I’ve had students text me after saying, “That was actually fun!” Yes, college interviews can be enjoyable!

Admissions Interviews: The Formal Ones

What they are: Interviews with actual admissions staff

Where: On campus, virtually, or at college fairs

Duration: 20-45 minutes

Tone: More formal and structured Weight: Can be more influential

Dr. Sapna’s Insight: These interviewers see hundreds of students. Being genuinely interested and prepared makes you memorable!

Evaluative vs. Informational Interviews

Evaluative: Your responses contribute to admission decisions

  • More structured questions
  • Interviewer takes notes
  • Written report submitted

Informational: Primarily for you to learn about the school

  • More conversational
  • You can ask more questions
  • Still reported but less weight

Pro tip: Treat EVERY interview as evaluative. Better safe than sorry!

Preparing for College Interviews: Your Success Strategy

Research Like a Detective

Before any college interviews, know:

  • Why this specific school? (Beyond rankings!)
  • Specific programs/professors that interest you
  • Recent campus news or initiatives
  • The school’s values and culture
  • Your interviewer (LinkedIn is your friend)

The Questions You WILL Get

Prepare thoughtful answers for these college interviews classics:

The STAR Method:

  • Situation: Set the scene
  • Task: What needed to be done?
  • Action: What YOU specifically did
  • Result: The outcome and what you learned

The Big Three:

  1. “Tell me about yourself” (Your 1-minute elevator pitch)
  2. “Why [This College]?” (Specific and genuine reasons)
  3. “What questions do you have for me?” (Always have 3-5 ready!)

Common Follow-ups:

  • What do you do for fun?
  • What’s your greatest strength/weakness?
  • Describe a challenge you’ve overcome
  • What would you contribute to our campus?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
  • What are you reading currently?
  • How do you handle stress?

Your Story Bank

Create 5-7 go-to stories that showcase different qualities:

  • Leadership example
  • Collaboration moment
  • Intellectual curiosity instance
  • Problem-solving situation
  • Personal growth experience
  • Failure/learning moment
  • Passion project

    Advanced College Interviews Strategies

    The Conversation Flip

Great college interviews feel like dialogues. Try:

    • “That’s interesting! In your experience…”
    • “I’ve been wondering about…”
    • “Your perspective would help me understand…”

This shows maturity and genuine interest!

    The Authenticity Factor

Admissions officers can spot rehearsed answers immediately. Instead:

    • Pause to think (it’s okay!)
    • Admit when you don’t know something
    • Share real emotions and reactions
    • Let your personality shine through

    Handling Curveballs

Sometimes college interviews include unexpected questions:

    • “If you were a kitchen appliance, which would you be?”
    • “Teach me something in 5 minutes”
    • “What would you change about your high school?”

Strategy: Take a breath, think creatively, and connect back to your qualities

College Interviews Best Practices: The Day-Of Guide

Alumni interviews: Business casual (nice jeans okay for coffee shops) Admissions interviews: Business casual to business formal Virtual interviews: Professional from waist up minimum!

    Questions to Ask Your Interviewer

Having thoughtful questions shows engagement. Try these (not ALL of them, but pick 3 to 5. I’d only ask 2 or 3 max).

UK University Interviews: A Different Style!

Now, let’s talk about UK interviews, especially Oxford and Cambridge. Having helped students with mock interviews for Oxford, and also students every year for a variety of Canadian universities,  I can tell you they’re COMPLETELY different from US and Canadian college interviews!

    The Academic Focus

UK interviews are essentially academic discussions:

    • Subject-specific questions dominate
    • Personal life rarely discussed
    • Problem-solving in real-time
    • Thinking process matters more than answers

    The Oxford/Cambridge Interview Experience

    Format:

    • 20-30 minutes each
    • Often includes pre-reading or problems
    • May span multiple days

    What to expect:

    • Professors conducting interviews
    • Academic puzzles or scenarios
    • Pushing your thinking further
    • Comfortable with saying “I don’t know, but…”

    Example questions (by subject):

    • English: “Is poetry meant to be difficult?”
    • Mathematics: Work through an unfamiliar proof
    • Medicine: Ethical scenarios or interpreting data
    • History: Analyze an unseen primary source

    UK Interview Preparation Tips

Subject mastery: Know your A-level content cold

    Super-curricular: Read beyond the syllabus

Think aloud: Practice verbalizing your thought process

Academic confidence: Defend your ideas respectfully

Intellectual flexibility: Change your mind when presented with new evidence

    After Your College Interviews

    What Happens Next

Alumni interviews: Report submitted to admissions Admissions interviews: Notes added to your file Timeline: Usually within 1-2 weeks Weight: Varies by school but rarely decisive alone

Common College Interviews Mistakes to Avoid

Being too rehearsed: Preparation is good, robotic is bad

Talking too much: Aim for 1  answers, max!

Being negative: About anything or anyone Forgetting it’s a conversation: Engage, don’t just respond Not asking questions: Shows lack of interest Checking phone: Just don’t!

    You’ve Got This!

Remember, college interviews are opportunities to:

    – Share your authentic self
    – Learn about your potential future home
    – Practice professional skills
